SINGAPORE - The Traffic Police today said it will step up enforcement efforts on roads as 5,400 motorists were caught beating the red light in just the first three months of this year.
This is up 800 from last year's 4,600 violations recorded over the same period.
The Straits Times reported that such cases have been on the rise in recent years with 17,490 motorists beating the red light in 2011 compared to 17,180 in 2010.
As part of its efforts, all enforcement cameras such as speed and red light ones are currently being digitised and penalties for different traffic offence are being reviewed.
At a press conference held earlier today, the Traffic Police addressed public concerns in light of the accidents at the junction of Victoria Street and Rochor Road.
In the accident involving the Ferrari and the taxi where three were killed, a foreigner was involved. This raised concerns from the public about foreigners getting licences in Singapore.
The Traffic Police clarified that foreign drivers need to pass the basic theory test to convert their licences if they stay in Singapore for more than 12 months.
The enforcement body revealed that out of 369,637 foreign drivers with converted licences last year, 0.1 per cent of them contributed to traffic accidents.
Clarifying that there are currently no regulations of additional tests for drivers of supercars, the Traffic Police added that the issue is not the type of car but that drivers should be responsible when on the roads.
