Public transport fare review committee formed

A 13-member committee has been formed by the government to review the fare adjustment formula and framework for fare adjustments.

The committee is chaired by former judge Richard Magnus, chairman of the Casino Regulatory Authority and member of the Public Transport Council (PTC).

Other members of the Fare Review Mechanism Committee are members from PTC, academia, consumer association, labour movement, as well as the private and public sectors.

The effectivness of the current fare adjustment formula will be reviewed and the committee will propose improvements.

The reviewed fare review framework should balance keeping public transport fares affordable with the long-term viability of the public transport operators, while encouraging operators to be efficient and encourage productivity improvement.

The committee will also have to ensure that the views of key stakeholders are adequently represented.

The Ministry of Transport said the committee is expected to complete its review and present its recommendations to Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew early next year.

Members of the public are invited to give their views and can refer to frmcommittee2012.sg for more information.
