LANGKAWI: Three Arab siblings who were on holiday here were killed when the taxi they were in collided head-on with a lorry yesterday.
The accident, which also killed the local taxi driver, occurred at 4.15pm in Jalan Air Panas here.
The siblings, two sisters, identified as Miriam Mohammed Maisara Abdul Hameed, 26, and Alaa Mohammed Maisara Abdul Hameed, 16, were British citizens and students of a private college in Cyberjaya while their brother Muhammed Maysra Abdul Hameed, 18, was a Sudanese.
The taxi driver, Zubir Ibrahim, 42, was from Kampung Behor Merah, here.
Langkawi police chief Superintendent Harrith Kam Abdullah said the taxi was heading towards Kuah town from Kilim, a famous tourist destination, when it crashed into a cement mixing lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
He said investigations showed the taxi driver was trying to overtake a vehicle at a curve when it slammed into the lorry.
The siblings were to leave the island on Monday.
Harrith said the firemen took 90 minutes to remove the bodies from the wrecked car. The bodies were later sent to Langkawi Hospital for a post-mortem.
Zubir's friend and fellow taxi driver Abidin Ali, 50, said the siblings had booked the taxi for the past two days to drive them around the island.
Zubir is survived by his wife, Rashidah Saad, 42, and three children, aged between 3 and 17.
