Flying car goes on sale for $1.6 million

Aircraft collector Gregg Herrick is selling his flying car, built in the 1950s, for $1.25 million (S$1.59 million).

The 1954 Taylor Aerocar, which sports a yellow and black body, reportedly still works.

Designed by Moulton Taylor in 1949, only five Aerocars were ever produced.

The Smithsonian's Paleofuture blog reported that in order to take flight the Aerocar must be converted into an aircraft with wings that fold forward.

This may seem inconvenient but the vehicle was marketed in the 1950s as being so effortless that a woman could do it "without soiling her gloves."

The video below, which was uploaded onto YouTube, is a newsreel about the Aerocar from November 5, 1951.

Herrick, who has over 40 vehicles in his collection, advised potential customers of the Aerocar to get in touch with their insurance agent as they would need both automobile and aviation insurance.
