The prices of dedicated GPS voice navigation systems for the car have come down by more than half over the past 12 months.
Here are some essential features.
Up-to-date maps
The dedicated car GPS system is only as good as the latest maps in it. Check for the frequency of the map updates from the company. (See models below).
Also ensure that the maps are complete. Some maps of Peninsula Malaysia feature only major roads and cities such as Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. Towns in between such as Malacca are not detailed enough.
If you also want to use the unit overseas, check to see what other maps are available.
Ease of use
Test different units before buying. Having more features is not always better.
Go instead for a system that is easy to use. Some systems do not allow you to search by postal codes and names of buildings.
Customised POIs (points of interests)
With some systems, you can install customised POIs to warn you of red light cameras, speed cameras and other speed traps as you are approaching them. Go for these.
Easy mounting and dismounting
Look for a system that allows for quick and easy mounting and removal of the GPS unit for safe storage.
It's possible that by mounting the unit either on the dashboard or on the front windscreen, you are also connected to the battery charger.
