VW Passat 1.8 TSI: Petrol-sipping Passat

FUEL efficiency has taken on new significance in these times of skyrocketing energy prices. Even if you can still afford petrol after these increases, it must be heartening to know that your car isn't as thirsty as it looks.

In this context, Volkswagen's introduction of a more fuel-frugal version of its Passat saloon is timely. The 1.8 TSI replaces the two-litre version, and while it seems like only a small difference in engine capacity, the savings are significant, according to VW.

When the bigger car, the 2.0 FSI, was driven in the city, its petrol consumption could run as high as 12.8 litres per 100 km, or about 7.8 km per litre (the two-litre engine was also normally aspirated).

Now, almost two years after the Passat was introduced here, there is the 1.8 TSI. The suffix may be a little confusing but essentially, this 1.8-litre version only has a turbocharger - not the twincharged combination of a turbo and a supercharger like in the Golf GT.

The advantages are clear. Despite having higher power and torque than the 2.0 FSI (the 1.8 TSI has an extra 10 horses and 50 Newton-metres more torque), the smaller engine turns in better mileage. Under the same urban cycle, VW says the 1.8 TSI averages just 11.3 litres per 100 km, or 8.8 km per litre. This is an 11.7 per cent improvement in fuel economy. In the combined cycle of city and highway driving, the consumption is an improved 8.2 litres per 100 km, or an enviable 12.2 km per litre.

Behind the wheel, the Passat 1.8 TSI feels as brisk as before. Only a hint of turbo lag is detected when trying to take off fast from stationary. But once it's on the go, the turbocharged power plant has more than adequate resources to pull this large and comfortable sedan around.

The six-speed automatic gearbox with its tiptronic manual shifting function also helps to increase the responsiveness of the engine. Change gears yourself and the VW can be an engaging drive. Only its subdued exterior styling prevents it from looking more dynamic.

But when combined with standard features such as six airbags, 12-way electric front seats and a keyless locking and starting system, the Passat 1.8 TSI can become more attractive.
