Review: Lexus LS430

As the flagship limousine of the Lexus luxury range, it is not surprising to learn that the LS features groundbreaking technology with each new generation. For example, the current LS460 introduced the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission in 2006 as well as a novel anti-submarine rear seat airbag.

When its hybrid version, the LS600h with a petrol-electric drive system, debuted in 2007, it was the world's first V8 hybrid model with all-wheel-drive.

It was the same 10 years ago when its predecessor, the third-generation LS430, came on the market. Back then, the LS430 replaced the second-generation LS400 with crisp new styling that conveyed a business-like if somewhat conservative air. But even after a decade, this 2002 model has not dated much, as evidenced by one such example that was made available recently for a test drive by authorised distributor Borneo Motors Singapore.

Like the car it replaced, the LS430 had continued to combine technology and comfort for one of the best ownership experiences. The cars were efficient and reliable, so much so that Borneo Motors says there are about 150 units of the 10-year-old LS430 still on the road today.

Taller and with a longer 2,925mm wheelbase, the 5,025mm-long LS430 also has a bigger V8 engine of 4.3 litres, bumped up from its predecessor's 4.0-litre V8. The 282bhp power plant is mated to the then ground-breaking six-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels.

Other technological highlights of the LS430 include the two knee airbags - for the driver and front seat passenger and in addition to the front and side airbags - as well as curtain airbags for both the front and rear sections of the cabin.

In terms of luxury, the LS430 also scored with an 11-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, plus electric rear seats with memory, auto return and built-in massage function. In the rear centre armrest, there is an integrated control panel for the seats, audio and aircon.

The leather seats themselves may show their age but the aforementioned features can still be enjoyed to the fullest, thanks to the good ride comfort.

Despite being 10 years old, the all-round double-wishbone suspension system does a good job. The LS430 has a smooth ride with a hushed cabin. Only a muted burble can be heard from the V8 under hard acceleration, a testimony to the Lexus's build quality.

Lexus LS430 (2000-2006)
Engine: 4,923cc V8
Transmission: Six-speed automatic
Max Power: 282bhp @ 5,600rpm
Max Torque: 417Nm @ 3,400rpm
0-100kmh: 6.3 seconds
Top speed: 250kmh
Distributor: Borneo Motors
Tel: 6631 1388

With 417 Newton-metres of torque, the LS430 provides adequately brisk progress. The auto transmission can be manually worked with the gated shifter if a bit more oomph or some engine braking are required but it feels clunky by today's standards. For a V8 though, the fuel consumption is commendable enough at 12.0 litres per 100 km under the combined cycle or 8.3km per litre.

There may be retro touches such as the dual-zone aircon system with auto swing centre airvents but overall, the Lexus LS430 makes a strong statement when it comes to refinement and quality. This is one oldie that is still a goodie.
