Thousands of factory workers are suffering as factories across China's manufacturing hub of Dongguan reel from the aftershocks of the global financial crisis.

Two toy factories, run by Hong Kong-listed Smart Union Group, had employed close to 7000 workers in Zhangmutou. Now the factory is silent, with its masses of workers stuck outside its gates waiting for the pay and compensation they are owed. Smart Union was once seen as one of China's better employers, with its factories churning out orders for clients as big as Mattel and Disney.
