Newborn flung from flats

GEORGE TOWN: A newborn was stuffed into a plastic bag before being flung from a high-rise building in Air Itam. A post-mortem revealed that all the bones in the baby boy's body were broken.

Police also found a piece of nylon cloth around the neck.

A first-year medical student, R. Vijayananthini, 21, made the gruesome discovery in the middle of a field near the Desa Mawar flats in Lintang Kampung Melayu Dua at 12.40pm, yesterday.

The fair-skinned infant, born a few hours earlier, still had his umbilical cord intact.

Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent Gan Kong Ming said the case had been classified as murder.

The police K-9 unit was despatched to the scene but the dog lost the scent halfway through the search.

Gan urged those with information to come forward and assist the police in their investigation.

Vijayananthini said she was on her way to her aunt's flat when she saw a black plastic bag with a leg sticking out.

"I thought it was a doll. I was horrified when I saw the umbilical cord sticking out of the bag and blood on the leg." --NST
