More than 1,000 people evacuated in M'sian floods

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA on Thursday evacuated more than 1,000 people in its southernmost state of Johor after torrential rain inundated parts of the region.

State news agency Bernama said 982 people in the state capital Johor Baru and 53 people in Kota Tinggi, north of the capital, were evacuated from their flooded homes.

It quoted Johor social welfare officer Manayi Ibrahim saying that eight temporary relief centres have now been opened in Johor Baru with two more in Kota Tinggi.

Last December, large parts of Johor state were flooded after days of heavy rain that left more than 110,000 people displaced.

The floods, which came in two waves, caused at least 1.5-billion ringgit (S$649 million) in damage, according to government estimates, and were some of the worst Malaysia had seen. -- AFP
