Warning against rumour-mongering: 'Spread rumours and face action'
Thu, Dec 06, 2007
The New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have warned they will take stern action against those who spread rumours via emails and the short-messaging service that something bad would happen here on Dec 16.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Ismail Omar said police viewed the matter seriously and would investigate it thoroughly to identify those behind the rumours.

"We won't compromise with anyone involved in spreading the rumours as this could disrupt public order."

The rumours, being spread since last week, also mentioned the purported discovery of a cache of weapons in a container outside the city.

Ismail denied this and described those spreading the allegation as irresponsible. "This is a serious allegation and we will investigate it thoroughly as this could create anxiety among the public.

"Those who received the emails or SMSes are not to forward them to others as action could be taken against them."

Datuk Ismail Omar also refuted the claim that a cache of weapons was found in a container outside the city.

"This is a very serious allegation and we will investigate it as it could create anxiety," he said.
