SUNGAI PETANI (Malaysia): A drinks seller who raped and sodomised his 15-year-old daughter in the living room of their house while his wife was asleep in their bedroom has been jailed 40 years by the Sessions Court here.

The 45-year-old man was jailed the maximum 20 years for raping the girl and another maximum of 20 years for sodomising her after he pleaded guilty to committing both offences at their one-bedroom house in Pengkalan Lebai Man here in February last year.

Sessions Judge Rusilah Yop also ordered the accused to be given three strokes of the rotan for each offence and that the jail terms run consecutively when passing sentence Thursday.

The accused had earlier claimed trial and only changed his plea at an earlier hearing after the victim testified in court.

According to the facts of the case presented in court, the accused had been raping and sodomising the victim two to three times a week for three years.

After she could not take the suffering anymore, the victim confided in a friend at school who tipped off their teacher.

The teacher informed the victim?s aunt who took the victim to lodge a police report in January this year. Police arrested the accused shortly after the report was lodged.?

Earlier, DPP Azeezi Nordin pressed for the maximum sentence, saying that the accused had raped and sodomised his own flesh and blood.

He said the case had attracted public interest and that the maximum sentence would act as a deterrent to others. He also said incest cases was still rampant.

Rusilah agreed with Azeezi that what the accused did was a heinous crime.
