M'sian housewife sues police for over RM1 million

ALOR STAR: A housewife from Pokok Sena here has filed a RM1.03mil suit against the police for allegedly causing the death of her son while in police custody.

Che Tom Isa, 57, accompanied by her husband Sulaiman Ismail, also 57, filed the suit at the Alor High Court Registrar Office at about 11am on Sunday.

Che Tom, who was represented by counsel V. Rajadevan, is seeking RM3,300 in special damages, RM500,000 in additional damages and another RM500,000 in exemplary damages.

Che Tom named the Kota Star OCPD and Inspector General of Police as the first and second defendants respectively.

She claimed that her son Mohd Rizal Sulaiman, 19, had died at the Kota Star police lock-up after he was allegedly beaten up by the police.

She claimed that the beatings occurred at Kampung Pauh, Bukit Tok Said, and at the Kota Star police headquarters.

Che Tom said Mohd Rizal was arrested by police during a drug raid at Kampung Pauh, on March 31 at about 9am.

She claimed that Mohd Rizal and his friends were beaten up by the police during the arrest.

She also claimed that despite her son?s injuries, he was taken to the Kota Star police headquarters lock-up at about 3pm the same day.

She claimed that Mohd Rizal, the youngest of four siblings, died in police lock-up at about 6pm on April 4.

Che Tom said that Mohd Rizal was a rupper tapper earning RM50 per day, adding that he gave half of his wages to her.
