>Kapar, Malaysia: Upset that a woman had rejected his advances, a 21-year-old man allegedly stabbed her 16 times before stabbing himself at a house in Sungai Kapar Indah here yesterday.
Informatics college student M. Indradevi, 22, died on the spot while the suspect is being warded at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital here.
In the incident, the man went to the victim's house about 4pm and started shouting and demanded that she open the door.
The victim, known as Deborah to her friends, was alone in the house and refused to open the door.
This enraged the suspect who broke the window panes and managed to unlock the door.
He also pried open the grille before entering the house.
It is learnt that he went to a room upstairs where the victim had locked herself in.
He broke open the door and dragged her down to the kitchen before stabbing her in the abdomen, chest and back.
He was believed to have then stabbed himself in the abdomen.
When police arrived at the scene, he was found lying on top of the victim.
Indradevi's mother M. Mari-amah, 57, said the family had known the suspect for about a month as he had helped provide transportation for the family.
She said the suspect stayed in the same housing estate and had helped send her son, who was injured in an accident recently, to hospital for check-ups.
"I left the house for work about 8am on Saturday and never thought that it would be the last time I would see my daughter."
She said Indradevi was with her brother the whole day but he later went out.
"I called her about 11pm and she said everything was fine. I told her to lock up before sleeping," said Mariamah who works as a caretaker in a church in Klang.
She said she received a call from a neighbour about 4pm yesterday and was told that there was a man shouting and breaking the window panes.
"The neighbour tried to stop the man but was scolded and told not to interfere in family matters."
She said the neighbour thought it was the brother inside the house that was causing the problem but when the man did not stop, he contacted police.
Neighbours heard Indradevi shouting for help but when they rushed to the house it was too late.
Mariamah said Indradevi was pursuing a diploma in computer studies and was also holding a clerical job in a firm in Subang Jaya.
"He had threatened to kill her once and had warned me not to prevent Indradevi from talking to him.
"I never thought he would carry out his threats."
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Mat Yusop said the suspect was believed to have been drunk at the time of the incident.
He said there were several cuts on his body leading police to believe that Indradevi had put up a fight before she was fatally stabbed.
The suspect was employed as an air-condition technician.
