KUALA LUMPUR: Shell Malaysia has warned the public of a scam where phone users receive SMSes saying they had won in a competition organised by the company.

The company advised anyone receiving an SMS asking them to bank in money into a particular account before receiving their winnings to ignore it.

It is learnt that many people, who thought that they had won prizes, had gone to Shell and other petroleum companies seeking their prizes.

"Please do not reply but ignore the SMS. Shell Malaysia does not use text messages to communicate with our contest winners.

"All announcements by Shell are advertised in the media and available on the Shell Malaysia website at www.shell.com.my," the company said in a statement.
