KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: For a woman whose only child was murdered, Loo Mei Foong did not show any signs of sadness at the magistrate's court yesterday.

Instead, the 24-year-old woman raised eyebrows in the packed courtroom when she giggled as the charge was being read out to her.

Loo, of Sentul, was not charged with her daughter's death but for lodging a false police report.

The killing of 5-year-old Cheah Sieow Eng is still being investigated.

Police are looking for Loo's boyfriend to assist in investigations.

Loo was charged with lodging a false report to Corporal Mohd Radzi Hashim at the Kepong police station, with the intention of causing investigating officer ASP Tan Chek Yang to stop further investigations into the child's death.

Loo allegedly told police that the girl had died after she was locked in the car while she went to eat dinner at a foodstall in Happy Gardens, Kepong, on Feb 20.

As the charge was read out to her, Loo told magistrate Maimoonah Aid that she could not understand as it was read too fast and was in Bahasa Malaysia.

When Maimoonah asked the accused if she understood the charge after it was read a second time, Loo giggled and said she wanted a Mandarin interpreter.

An interpreter was brought in and after the charge was read for the third time, the woman claimed trial.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Hafiz Mohd Yusoff applied to set bail at RM10,000 as the offence involved the death of a child.

In mitigation, counsel Adam B.H. Yap said Loo came from a poor financial background and could not afford the amount, adding that Loo was also innocent until proven guilty.

Maimoonah set bail at RM3,000 in one surety and fixed April 7 for mention, but Loo did not post the bail.

Three of her family members were present in court.
