A MAN was fined $1,000 on Friday for pouring hot coffee on the shoulder of a waiter who had asked him to pay for the drinks.

Mohamed Shis Mohamed Said, 51, admitted to causing hurt to Mr Mohamed Johari Mahmood, 20, at New Hawa Restaurant at Changi Road on Aug 20 last year.

A magistrate's court heard that Mohamed Shis was having a meal with his family at the restaurant when Mr Johari served him drinks and asked him to pay for it.

Unhappy with the request, Mohamed Shis told the waiter he would pay together with the food. The victim explained that this was the restaurant policy.

When the victim eventually collected money from his wife, Mohamed Shis took a cup of hot coffee and poured on the victim's right shoulder.

He could have been jailed for up to one year or fined up to $1,000 or both for the offence.
