A JOURNALIST was found guilty on Tuesday of causing death by dangerous driving and grievously hurting a motorcyclist.

Lim Hong Eng, a Shin Min Daily News executive editor, 56, was convicted by District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim of beating the red lights and colliding into a motorcycle which had the right of way, resulting in the death of the pillion rider on Christmas Eve two years ago.

The pillion, Ms Melania Melaniawati, 24, died two days later of her injuries.

Ms Melaniawati's employer, Mr David Jermais Pattiselanno, 70, was riding the motorcycle when he was flung off and fell onto the windscreen of Lim's Toyota Wish multi-purpose vehicle on impact.

Mr Pattiselanno suffered a compound fracture in his leg and still needs crutches to walk.

The prosecution's case was that Lim failed to keep a proper lookout and drove through the junction on red lights and hit the motorcycle which was going straight along Dunearn Road.

Lawyer Subhas Anandan, together with Mr Sunil Sudheesan, was given until next Tuesday afternoon to present a mitigation plea.

A third charge of using a cellphone while driving has been stood down.

Lim faces a jail term of up to five years' jail for causing death by dangerous driving.

For causing grievous hurt, she can be jailed for up to two years or fined up to $1,000 or both
