Ex-LTA exec jailed for corruption

A FORMER executive with Land Transport Authority was sentenced to 10 months' jail on Monday after he was found guilty of 32 corruption charges.

Muhundan Muthusamy 38, was also ordered to pay a total penalty of $19,684.

He was found guilty by District Judge Kow Keng Siong of corruptly getting bribes in the form of salary and Central Provident Fund contributions paid to his wife.

While he was in charge of Tuas checkpoint, Muhundan handed an application form with the particulars of his wife, Madam Kesavan Preethi, to Gold Eagle Services which had been awarded a contract to provide manpower at the checkpoints.

From July 2004 to October 2005, his wife was paid a total salary of $15,492 and CPF of $4,192 even though she did not work there.

The prosecution's case was that he took the bribes so as not to make things difficult for Gold Eagle's workers in his supervision.

The judge allowed him to start his sentence on Aug 4 so that he could settle his personal affairs. He could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years on each charge.
