Aussie TV reporter on drug charge gets legal advice, treatment: minister

AN AUSTRALIAN television reporter charged with drug trafficking in Singapore has received legal advice and treatment for a serious eye infection, Australia's Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said on Wednesday.

Peter Lloyd, 41, is being held in a medical facility at the Changi Prison complex, prison service enquiry officers said earlier.

Lloyd, of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was arrested in Singapore last week.

'He saw his lawyers yesterday and I understand that his employer is also making available legal advice to him,' Mr Smith told reporters on the sidelines of meetings with regional foreign ministers.

Mr Smith said that Lloyd is getting treatment 'for a serious eye infection' and is being held at a remand centre.

'The treatment of his medical condition is appropriate and that's continuing and he's being rendered all the usual consular assistance,' the minister said.

Lloyd is charged with trafficking about one gram of methamphetamine to a Singaporean for 100 Singapore dollars at a hotel early this month.

He also faces a second charge for allegedly being in possession of about one gram of the stimulant methamphetamine, also known as 'ice', at a local hospital.

If convicted of the trafficking charge, Lloyd faces between five and 20 years' imprisonment and five to 15 strokes of the cane.

His case is to be heard in court again on Friday. -- AFP
