Tue, Aug 12, 2008
The Straits Times

AN APPEAL judge on Tuesday rejected the appeal of a former senior immigration officer who helped his China mistress enter Singapore using a fake identity and instead upped his earlier two-year jail term by nine months.

In sentencing Thong Sing Hock, 50, to 33 months' jail, Judge of Appeal V. K. Rajah said: 'He will now have more time to reflect on the deplorable nature of his transgressions and come to terms with reality.'

Justice Rajah also threw out allegations that Thong, who is already serving his sentence, had made against his former lawyer, Mr Choo Si Sen, at a previous appeal hearing last month.

Thong, who maintained that he did not know his mistress was an immigration offender till later, had blamed Mr Choo for advising him to plead guilty despite this.
