KAJANG, MALAYSIA - The woman, Wong Sau Lai, was wanted by police after jumping bail and was believed to have been hiding at the apartment with her boyfriend, Goh Kian Chai, 40, who was also killed in the shoot-out.
A police officer, Chief Inspector Ng Wai Leong, from the Kuala Lumpur Serious Crimes Division suffered two gunshot wounds in the incident, which occurred at 3am.
Ng is being treated at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, where his condition is listed as stable.
Federal CID director Datuk Bakri Zinin, who was at the scene later, described both the suspects as violent and trigger-happy as they were both believed to be dadah addicts.
After the shoot-out, police found a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol and a .38 revolver at the scene.
Also found were several car registration plates, car keys, parang, axes and equipment used to break into vehicles.
Wong, Goh and another suspect who was arrested earlier, are believed to be responsible for 32 car-jacking incidents in the Klang Valley.
Wong had jumped bail in May after she was charged with being in possession of a stolen vehicle while Goh had several convictions for armed robbery.
Police believe that Wong masterminded the car-jackings where she used herself as bait to "disarm" her victims before her accomplices moved in with guns.
It is learnt that each stolen vehicle was "fenced" for RM15,000 and the trio's monthly income was about RM60,000. However, it is learnt that the suspects were hooked on syabu.
Yesterday's operation was set in motion after police got wind of the couple's hideout.
The police team forced their way into the first floor flat when suddenly shots rang out from the master bedroom.
Ng was hit in the legs and his colleagues dragged the injured policeman from the scene. At the same time, the two suspects fired several rounds from the balcony when they realised that police had cordoned off the area.
There was a two-hour standoff during which time a crack Special Action Unit team from Bukit Aman was sent to the scene.
After several failed attempts to get the couple to surrender, the commando unit stormed the room and another shoot-out ensued before the two were killed.
Wong was believed to have been still active in robbery despite being charged in May.
The circumstances of her arrest then was equally dramatic. She rammed a police patrol car, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Wong was offered bail when she was brought to court but she failed to turn up at her next hearing.
Police got a lead on her whereabouts after nabbing the third member of the gang two weeks ago.
"We are now trying to track down this gang's fences who helped dispose of the stolen vehicles. Some of the vehicles were stripped while others were exported to the Middle East and South Africa," Bakri said.
