JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA: A 19-year-old Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) candidate led police on a car chase when he tried to evade inspection at a roadblock set up in Johor Jaya on Wednesday.

The youth, who was driving a car belonging to a relative, made a U-turn when he spotted the roadblock. Police gave chase.

Two warning shots were fired before police cornered the youth.

He was found in possession of three Eramin-5 pills and four amphetamine pills.

He also did not have a driving licence.

State deputy police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the youth crashed into a car in his bid to outrun the police.

He also tried to ram into policemen when they forced his vehicle to a stop in Taman Sri Amar, 25km away, in the 6.15pm incident.

He was detained but later released on police bail to allow him to sit for his STPM examination.

In an unrelated raid, Tun Hisan said police raided a rented shophouse in Taman Pelangi, which had been turned into a gambling den, and arrested 27 people, including 10 women, aged between 22 and 65.

One of the men detained was also wanted for robbery.

A total of RM122,480 was seized from the gambling den, which offered dice and card games.
