KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Police arrested two men who hijacked a lorry carrying a consignment of soap in Jalan Klang Lama following a high-speed chase early yesterday.

Lorry driver Ramesh Muniandy and his assistant were driving the consignment of soap worth several hundred thousand ringgit in Taman Sri Manja, Jalan Klang Lama, heading for Subang at 6.30am when they made a stop and were confronted by two men armed with parang.

Five men in a van had been tailing them, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Ramesh and his assistant ran away and the two robbers drove off with the goods.

Ramesh and his assistant alerted the police.

An all-points bulletin with a description of the lorry was issued to all patrol cars.

A patrol car spotted the lorry in Jalan Sungai Besi and signalled to the vehicle to stop.

The men ignored them and sped off.

A high-speed chase ensued with four other police patrol cars joining in.

The chase was over 1km before the lorry skidded and crashed into a pillar near Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

The lorry overturned and hit three cars, spilling the soap on to the road.

Two robbers, who suffered bumps and bruises, were caught by the police.

No one else was injured.

Police are looking for three accomplices.

Brickfields deputy police chief Superintendent Sulaiman Salleh confirmed the hijacking but declined to give details.
