Bank robber jailed 8 yrs, caned

A MAN who tried to rob the United Overseas Bank while wearing a black head scarf was sentenced to eight years' preventive detention and eight strokes of the cane on Wednesday.

Ismail Shaikh Ahmad, 45, had pleaded guilty earlier to the attempted robbery at the City Plaza bank and taking morphine on Nov 10.

A district court heard that he had walked up to the bank counter that afternoon with a green paper bag.
