Trader turns himself in over maid abuse case

KLANG, MALAYSIA - Police have arrested a trader in connection with the alleged abuse of an Indonesian maid.

The trader, in his 30s, surrendered to the police at 3.45pm yesterday.

His 29-year-old wife was arrested on Tuesday and had been remanded for seven days till Oct 27 for further investigations.

Klang police chief Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop said the man, who has seven previous criminal records that included drug offences, causing hurt and robbery, would be remanded today.

On Tuesday, the Indonesian maid, who had a wound on her leg as well as bruises on her arms and face, was rescued by police from a house in Taman Sentosa.

Mautik Hani, 36, from Surabaya was found in the toilet of the house at 7pm following a tip-off.

The victim is believed to have worked in the house for the past two months and was locked in the toilet for two days before she was discovered.

Mautik is currently being treated at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.

It is learnt that representatives from the Indonesian embassy visited Mautik yesterday to obtain more details.

Mautik did not have any valid travel documents when she was rescued.
