A 14-year-old student was seriously injured after falling off a motorcycle when a thief snatched her handphone in Pekan Semeling here.

This incident on Thursday night happened some 24 hours after a 66-year-old woman pillion rider died after a snatch thief grabbed her handbag in Alor Setar.

In the 9pm incident, SMK Sungai Layar Form Two student Nadirah Saerah Mohd Zin, who was riding pillion, was unconscious for four hours after the suspect who was on another motorcycle, snatched her handphone and kicked her off the vehicle.

Her friend, Norhafizah Abdul Rahman, 16, who was the motorcyclist, suffered light bruises.

Nadirah said she needed more than 10 stitches on her face, hands and stomach.

"We were on the way home after buying a few items from a nearby shop when the snatch thief attacked us," Nadirah said in an interview.

She had noticed the suspect as she was reloading her new prepaid card onto her handphone at the grocery shop.

Kuala Muda Deputy OCPD Supt Ong Aik Chang confirmed the case and said police had recorded statements from both victims.
