Stealing is the largest form of criminal activity in the capital city, the Jakarta Police says.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said Tuesday that from 299 criminal cases unveiled by the police during the "Berantas Jaya" operation from Jan. 30 to Feb. 12, stealing by force (curat), stealing using violence (curas) and motorcycle robbery made up 143 cases.

Extortion and assault ranks second with 37 cases, while other crimes numbered 23 cases.

Gambling contributed to 16 cases and pickpocketing made up 10.

Boy said that the policemen were able to net 419 suspects, 356 of who were under detention.

"The remaining 63 suspects are under control of the police," Boy said during a press conference.

He added that the investigators had seized seven weapons, 26 bullets, 63 motorcycles, 36 hand phones and money worth around Rp 68 million (US$ 7,300) as evidence.

Boy cited jewelry-shop robbery as one case the police had been working on.

On Jan. 25, he said, the police had arrested five men who were allegedly working together to rob shops selling gold and jewelry across Greater Jakarta.

"We arrested them in Lampung. We confiscated five motorcycles, too," he said.

He added that the shops had suffered Rp 720 million in losses because of robbery.

In the robbery case, Boy said, an officer from the Brigade Mobile Unit had been arrested for allegedly providing a weapon to the burglars.

"The suspect, who cannot be identified yet, acquired the weapon when he was on a duty in Aceh.

"He sold the weapon and bullets for Rp 10 million to the burglars," he said.

Boy added that the investigators were considering which articles to charge the officer.

"We are also still looking for the whereabouts of eight other people," he said.
