Ex-croupier hid $15,000 worth of chips in his socks

An ex-croupier at the Marina Bay Sands casino has been jailed six months for committing criminal breach of trust.

The Straits Times reported that Joseph Tan Shi Yi, 26, slipped a $5,000 chip into his right sock on three occasions between April and August.

He then spent most of this money gambling at Genting Highlands and in a casino on a cruise ship.

According to the English daily, he paid $200 to an unknown Chinese national to cash out the first chip.

On the second occasion, he got his girlfriend to encash another chip after putting it in his sock.

He was nabbed on the third occasion when he was caught on video taking a $5,000 chip.

The surveillance department had decided to keep an eye on him after the chip went missing at the end of his shift, but no one had come to play at his baccarat table that day.

He admitted to taking the chip and surrendered it after he was brought to an interview room.
