Obesity tips scales of justice against robber

WEST JAKARTA - Obesity is not only a threat to your health, but it can also interfere with a life of crime, as one overweight thief learned as he attempted to abscond with his booty.

Robbery suspect Irwan Setiawan, aka Kentung, who tops the scale at 114 kilograms, told officers at the Tanjung Duren police station in West Jakarta that he was just too heavy to run away from the angry mob that caught him on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old said he called out to Bambang Irawan, one of his accomplices, to help push him down the street faster but he was just too fat and his pursuers quickly caught up. Fortunately, the police appeared on the scene to save Kentung from the savage beatings.

Pos Kota daily reported that Kentung, Bambang and a third unnamed accomplice who escaped allegedly threatened a public minivan passenger with a knife before making off with his mobile phone. The victim screamed for help as the men ran away.

An eyewitness said that Kentung apparently withstood the beating due to his bulk, leaving the disappointed bystanders to turn their attention to thrashing Bambang.

Kentung said that he had only one regret: asking Bambang for help. "I pity him for trying to help me and then getting caught by the mob. Otherwise he would have managed to escape," he said.

Tanjung Duren police precinct chief Comr. Indra Dwi Laksmana said that Kentung and Bambang were repeat offenders.
