Jasin, Malaysia: People living along the Jasin-Muar-Tangkak border have been advised not to be taken in by rumours of a spread in Chikungunya fever transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad said only six cases of the suspected mosquito-borne viral fever had been confirmed of the 76 suspected cases as of early this month.

"We want to dispel rumours that Jasin and Tangkak hospitals have no more beds because they are full with those down with the virus," he said, adding that there were also rumours that the fever was being spread by bats.

He stressed that the six patients confirmed with Chikungunya fever had been discharged after treatment at Jasin Hospital.

He said that health officers were working with local councils to carry out inspections, fogging and awareness programmes at the areas concerned.
