Mahathir's sister laid to rest

ALOR SETAR, MALAYSIA - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's eldest sister was laid to rest at the Akar Peluru Muslim Cemetery here yesterday.

Rafeah Mohamad, 94, died of old age at a private hospital here at about 9.45pm on Tuesday.

Dr Mahathir and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali attended the burial with family members.

Among those who paid their last respects were Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and deputy state Umno chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.

Rafeah was admitted to the hospital after complaining of shortness of breath at about 4pm on Tuesday.

She was living with her niece Datin Yasmin Mashahor at Persiaran Sultan Abdul Hamid here before her death.

She is survived by a son, Ahmad Mustafa Mat Hassan, and four grandchildren.

With her death, Dr Mahathir, 84, who is the youngest sibling, is the sole surviving member of his family.
