KOTA BARU, Malaysia - A total of 92% of Chinese students who excelled in the SPM and STPM secured a place in public universities, MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said.

Dr Ng, who is also Tourism Minister, added that the figure was higher than the corresponding year's of about 80%.

"The MCA has done this on the quiet to champion the rights of the students unlike the opposition who would rather make noise and do nothing,"The students were offered competitive courses in line with their excellent results," Dr Ng said in her speech at the Kelantan MCA annual general meeting.

The meeting was opened by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and attended by MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha and Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Ng added that the party's effort had silenced the critics, especially the opposition, who brought up the issue every year.

"This is part of the MCA's effort to develop the nation and to address problems faced by the Chinese community including in the economy, poverty eradication, scholarships and others,'' she said.
