Aug tourist arrivals rise 4.7%

SINGAPORE received 911,000 visitors in August, up 4.7 per cent from a year ago and a record high for the month, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said on Wednesday.

Accounting for 49 per cent of total visitor arrivals were visitors from Indonesia, China, Australia, Japan and India.

STB said that 159,000 Indonesians, 114,000 Chinese and 62,000 Australians visited the city.

The top five visitor-generating markets also included Japan and India, with 58,000 and 56,000 visitors repectively.

Visitors from China also recorded an all-time high, surpassing the previous record fof 113,000 set in July 2006.

Hotels also set a new record in Aug, generating $159 million in room revenue. This is an increase of 28.2 per cent from Aug 2006.

Meanwhile, the Average Room Rates (ARR) and the Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) also set new records as compared to August last year.

The ARR is now at an estimated $198, representing an increase of 28.4 per cent, while the AOR is set to reach 89 per cent, a 2.2 percentage point increase over Aug of last year.
