A WOMAN who offered a bribe to a police corporal, so he would be lenient to her husband caught speeding on an expressway, was jailed for two weeks and fined $2,000 on Wednesday.

Designer artist Yu Jie, 31, admitted offering $50 to Corporal Kevin Koh Chee Seng, in return for his reducing her husband?s offending speed of 115kmh to 109kmh, on Tampines Expressway on March 20.

Her husband, Mr Liu Leming, 35, having just passed his driving test six months before, had previously picked up six demerit points - also for speeding along an expressway - and could not afford to be given another six points that being clocked at 115kmh would bring.

Under the Road Traffic Driver Improvement Points System, a new driver who chalks up 12 or more points within a year would have to re-sit a driving test to regain his licence.

When Mr Liu, a manager in the same firm as his wife, was stopped by Cpl Koh for driving at 115kmh, he pleaded for leniency on account of his previous summons. Then, his wife chimed in to plead his case.

When Cpl Koh rejected their pleas and proceeded to record the summons, Yu whipped out $50 and said to Cpl Koh, 'This is for you to buy cigarettes.'

When Cpl Koh turned down the offer and warned her that bribery was a serious offence, she kept the money.

She could have been fined up to $100,000 or jailed for up to five years, or both, for corruption.
