WELL-KNOWN US cell and development biologist, Colin Stewart, has joined the Institute of Medical Biology (IMB) as a Principal Investigator.
A news release from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research said on Thursday Dr Steward will head a new Developmental and Regenerative Biology group to study mutiple tissue failure in genetic disorders.
His previous research was instrumental to the embryonic stem cell work in the world today.
A*Star said he will also 'be investigating how the organisation of the cell nucleus plays a role in aging, obesity, and other degenerative diseases'.
'His group will be deeply involved in studying the importance of nuclear architecture for embryonic and adult stem cell functions.'
Dr Steward said: 'The concept of the Biopolis where research institutes with different research capabilities are co-located is an excellent one, and especially beneficial to my field of research where I would need to collaborate with scientists with different areas of expertise.'
'I am especially excited at the prospect of working with several of them in the area of embryonic stem cells,' said Dr Stewart.
Before he came to Singapore, Dr Stewart was the chief of the Laboratory for Cancer and Development at the National Cancer Institue at Frederick, USA. He was also an Associate Member of the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology (1988-1995).
