A SECRETARY went on trial on Wednesday for allegedly burning her Filipino maid on her left hand with a hot iron.
Ng Tang Kwee, 39, denied causing hurt to Ms Adelaida Tanurio San Juan, 33, with a heated iron at her flat in Hougang Avenue 4 on Nov 11 last year.
Site supervisor Chua Beng Nam, 46, was passing by a block opposite Hougang Stadium that day when he saw a Filipino maid crying and surrounded by two elderly women.
Asked if she needed help, the maid repeatedly said she wanted to go home.
Mr Chua said it seemed that the maid, whom he could not identify, felt pain on the back of her hand. He then called the police from his mobile phone.
Ms San Juan was taken to Changi General Hospital where Senior Consultant Goh Siang Hiong found a 10x8cm partial thickness burn with sharp edges over the back of her left hand. The injury was consistent with burnt by iron.
Dr Goh said the iron would have been placed on the hand for a few seconds for the skin to be inflamed and blistered.
The previous investigation officer, Staff Sergeant Norazhar Saadon, from Ang Mo Kio police, said he saw Ms San Juan crying at the staircase landing of the block on the 10th floor that day.
He said Ms San Juan told him she had been burnt on her hand with a hot iron by her employer. The officer then went to the unit and spoke to the house occupant, Ng, who revealed that her maid had damaged her blouse during ironing while she was out with the children.
The hearing continues.
