Robber gets 7 years jail, 9 strokes

A MAN was jailed for seven years and ordered to be given nine strokes of the cane on Wednesday for drug offences as well as robbing an elderly woman inside a lift.

Lim Kwang Liang, 46, who pleaded guilty to three charges, had dashed into a lift at Kim Keat Link after Madam Kang Lim Hiang, 79, on Oct 18 and robbed her of a gold bangle, a gold necklace and a jade pendant totalling $625.

Eleven days later, he was spot checked at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh and found with two straws of heroin. He also had taken morphine.

Lim as been in and out of drug rehabilitation centres since the 1980s.

Three other drug charges were considered.
