YOUNG PAP (YP) is stepping up its recruitment efforts to reach out to overseas Singaporeans and new citizens.

Demographic trends indicate that these are two fast-growing segments of the under-40 population here.

YP chairman, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, who is also Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, said the YP has to continually recruit and renew its ranks since those who turn 40 automatically cease to be members.

But the Minister was also quick to add that it is not just a numbers game.

'It's not about numbers per se but about the type and quality of people, and the way we nurture and incubate people and prepare them for the future,' he said in an interview with The Straits Times.

The YP declined to disclose current membership figures, but three years ago, it was just over 6,000.
