PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Thursday that although various measures can be taken to help deal with the rising cost of living here, the right way to overcome such problems is to grow the economy so that real incomes rise.
He noted that when the economy grew by 7.5 per cent last year, incomes did not just rise at the top end but across the board.
'Even (at) the bottom, the middle, everybody's real income went up. I think that is the right way to overcome these problems,' he told reporters on the first day of the Chinese New Year.
This was after he visited workers at Changi Airport's new Terminal 3 to thank them for working when most people have the day off to celebrate with family and friends.
Mr Lee, responding to questions from reporters, also offered another way in which Singaporeans could adjust to rising food prices - a recent concern that many here have.
They could buy frozen food instead of more expensive fresh food, he said, just days after had also suggested that people could opt for house brand products which cost less than others.
The Government's Budget statement on Feb 15 is expected to include measures to help ease the burden of those most affected by rising costs.
But Mr Lee declined to hint at what help might come their way, saying 'we have to wait and see what the Finance Minister comes up with'.
