A MOTORIST was jailed for one week on Monday for fighting with a delivery rider over a road traffic incident.

Tham Sai Ham, 53, a jewellery maker, admitted to the punch-up with Muhammad Khairul Asyraf Hassan, 18, along Pasir Ris Drive 10 on Aug 18 last year.

A magistrate's court heard that Khairul was riding past a carpark on his left along Pasir Ris Drive 10 that evening when Tham, who was driving from the opposite direction, made a right turn towards the carpark entrance.

As a result, Khairul had to swerve his motorcycle to the left to avoid a collision.

After stopping his motorcycle a short distance away, he shouted at Tham, who alighted from his car and punched the rider once on his face. Khairul retaliated by punching him back.

Tham walked back to his car after punching Khairul several times on his head.

Worried that the driver might leave, Khairul shouted again at Tham to stay put. Tham then walked towards Khairul and punched him again, causing him to fall to the ground, and continued punching and kicking him until passers-by stopped him.

Both suffered minor injuries. Khairul will be dealt with separately.

Tham could have been jailed for up to one year or fined up to $1,000, or jailed and fined, for the offence.
