THE National University of Singapore (NUS) will offer a new masters degree in Landscape Architecture in the new term, school officials said on Wednesday.
The course, the first professional degree of its kind in Singapore, comes as landscape architecture appears set to take off.
According to a 2006 Singapore Landscape Industry Survey, the sector is expected to grow to $153 million by 2014. About 350 architects will be needed in the next 10 years to support its growth.
Landscape architects plan, design and manage areas such as public parks, housing estates and new roads.
The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), a government agency that develops adult training programmes, is offering 24 scholarships worth some $800,000 for the new programme.
The scholarships will be given out over the next three years under a new Landscape Industry Scholarship Programme - a partnership between the WDA and landscape sector employers. It will include course fees and a monthly stipend.
Offered by the NUS Department of Architecture, the two-year masters degree programme will provide training in areas such as architectural design, site planning and historic preservation.
It is the first masters degree to be supported and endorsed by the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) and the first to be offered by a local university.
Students will be required to work in the landscape industry for two years after the completion of the programme.
Applications for the programme and scholarships close on March 20 and classes start in August.
