On Sunday evening, about 30 Tibetans will hold a candlelight vigil for their homeland, which has been rocked by unrest over the last two weeks.
It is believed that Tibetans in Singapore number between 50 and 100. This tiny community includes Tibetan Buddhist monks who pass through and students who come here to learn English.
The vigil, to be held at a dormitory in Geylang for Tibetan Buddhist monks, will include prayers for peace and for those who have lost their lives in the recent unrest, its organiser said.
The violence, which broke out on March 10, involved Tibetan rioters and China's security forces in the capital Lhasa and elsewhere. It has left, depending on different sources, between 10 and 100 people dead.
Of the vigil, travel consultant Pari Jinpa Gyatso, 31, told The Sunday Times he had approached, and was turned away, by six Tibetan Buddhist centres here.
Eventually, a Singaporean who runs a free dormitory for Tibetan Buddhist monks in Geylang agreed to let him use the space for the vigil.
