No criminal charges to be brought against anyone for escape

This was the conclusion that the Committee of Inquiry (COI) came to during the course of its investigation into how the former JI terrorist leader managed to give his guards the slip at the Whitley Road detention centre (WRDC).

In the report that was submitted by the COI to Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng, there was no evidence to show that any one individual could have masterminded Mas Selamat's escape from the detention centre.

The COI observed that no one individual has full control to bring about the 'confluence of material factors' at the time of his escape.

The Criminal Investigation Department also conducted an independent investigation, and found no evidence to suggest collusion on the part of any of the Internal Security Department (ISD) officers, WRDC staff or any of the guards involved.

However, it is still possible that he received help after escaping from the detention centre, even though there is nothing to confirm this now. The ISD is pursuing this scenario now, reported the Minister.
