FORMER National Kidney Foundation chief executive officer T.T. Durai turned up in court on Tuesday to begin his three-month sentence.
The 59-year-old, accompanied by his elder son, put on a cheerful front when media photographers rushed forward to take his pictures. He even raised his right hand and said 'Hi' to them.
Durai lost his appeal against conviction and sentence 10 days ago for using a fake invoice to deceive the charity into paying $20,000 to an interior designer friend.
The case followed on the heels of the scandal which rocked the charity and led Durai and the entire board to step down in 2005.
Durai's younger brother and a few friends were waiting for him inside the Subordinate Courts building when he arrived at around 9.15am. He shook hands with some lawyer friends and spoke to a couple and friend who were there earlier.
A further pre-trial conference on his second charge of using a false invoice to approve a $5,000 payment from the NKF to an advertising company will be held next month.
With one-third remission for good behaviour, Durai will be out in two months. He is currently working for Property Facility Services, a real estate management company, and is starting a firm in the United Arab Emirates offering health care and human resource services in the Middle East.
