MR TEO Chee Hean and Mr Michael Palmer, MPs for the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, attended the funeral wake of SAF pilot trainee, Officer Cadet Clifton Lam Jia Hao, 20, at Rivervale Drive on Friday afternoon.

Mr Teo, who is the Defence Minister, spent about 20 minutes at the wake and spoke with family members of OCT Lam, who collapsed while undergoing jungle training in Brunei and died on Wednesday evening.

He was the second training fatality in two days. On Tuesday morning, Recruit Andrew Cheah Wei Siong, also 20, fainted during a 2 km walk in Pulau Tekong and died later in hospital.

Following the two deaths, the Singapore Armed Forces on Thursday ordered an unprecedented three-day halt to all physical and endurance training within the military.

During the time-out, the entire force of 300,000 active personnel and national servicemen will not have to undergo obstacle courses, route marches or do fitness tests. Physically demanding field training is also cut.

This is to allow the SAF to ensure that proper procedures are in place and being followed, said Mr Teo on Thursday.
