SINGAPORE has conferred the Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore/Business) on Dr Akihiro Yamaguchi, the senior managing director of Mitsui Chemicals, Inc, for his significant contributions to the growth of the chemicals industry here.

Dr Yamaguchi personally championed for Mitsui to site its first overseas technical centre on Jurong Island.

The centre, which focuses on research and development work in petrochemicals, was the first-of-its-kind in Singapore from a major Japanese chemical company. It opened in late 2006.
