POLICE have busted an illegal gambling den operating within a private condominium in Yishun.

Following a tip-off, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division raided the condominium at midnight last Friday, and arrested 13 men and two women, aged between 21 and 27.

Two of the men were believed to be the operators of the gambling den, where Texas poker was being played. The police also seized cash and gaming paraphernalia.

Anyone who games in a common gaming house faces a fine of up to S$5,000 and/or a jail term of up to six months. The owner, occupier or manager of a common gaming house can be fined up to S$50,000 and jailed for up to three years.

The Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent Manimaran Pushpanathan, said: "Illegal gambling operators are sadly mistaken if they think they can escape detection by operating under the cover of funeral wakes or private premises."
