And therefore we must work hard to cultivate the ground, to look after Singaporeans, to get them prepared to be able to survive and to do well in an unpredictable world.
It's been nine hot days of campaigning, intense soul-searching, often emotional. We've had debates on major issues that concern voters, whether they're immediate issues like cost of living and housing, or longer-term things like education and health care, or less tangible things like our political system and political values.
There's also been a fair amount of ventilation of frustrations, grievances, unfulfilled aspirations.
While voters have given the PAP a strong mandate, many voters, including some of those who voted for us, have also clearly expressed their significant concerns, both on the issues and on our approach to government.
We hear all your voices, whether it's expressed in person or over the Internet.
The PAP will analyse the results of the elections, learn from what has emerged in this General Election, put right what is wrong, improve what can be made better, and also improve ourselves to serve Singaporeans better.
And that means not only the Government working hard on its own with a population passive, but engaging Singaporeans in the more difficult decisions and trade-offs which governing Singapore involves.
There are often no easy choices and the more we can appreciate this and grapple with the dilemmas and the trade-offs together, I think the better the answers we'll come up with and the more we'll be able to have workable solutions.
But the General Election was yesterday.
Today is already the day after the General Election. The vote is final. The majority of Singaporeans have decided.
It's time for healing and for acceptance of the people's decisions, not just for the PAP but for all Singaporeans.
The political contest goes on in every country in one form or other. But in Singapore, we must make sure it's harnessed for the good to make Singapore stronger and never to divide us.
We're all fellow Singaporeans, so at the end of the General Election, let us close ranks to secure our future together.
