PORT DICKSON, MALAYSIA - A 21-year-old youth from Johor was allowed to put up at mosques and surau in several states but "repaid" the kindness by stealing electrical items from them.
His stealing spree, however, came to an end when he was detained by police while trying to sell the stolen items at Taman Orked here.
OCPD Supt Baljeet Singh said initial investigations showed that the suspect was involved in thefts at seven mosques and surau in Salak Tinggi and Kapar in Selangor; Tanjung Keling in Malacca; Muar and here.
"We seized four amplifiers, a DVD player, a mobile phone and a Yamaha motorcycle from the suspect, who was in the midst of selling the items when he was arrested," he said.
He said the seized items were worth about RM25,000.
The suspect has been remanded for six days to assist in police investigations.
In another incident, a 56-year-old woman who was walking along the road shoulder at KM7.5 Jalan Port Dickson-Seremban was killed after she was knocked down by a lorry tanker at about 12.30pm yesterday.
K. Kamala was pronounced dead soon after she was brought to the Port Dickson Hospital.
Supt Baljeet said police have detained the driver of the lorry tanker to assist in investigations.
"We have also seized his vehicle to enable police to carry out their probe," he said, adding that the case was being investigated under section 41 1(c) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
